Story Animation

Analyze Learners

State Objectives

- Students will, in groups:

o Create a short story

o Use digital cameras to take still shots of themselves

o Compile their story and photos into a video

o Present their video to the class

o Write a reflection of the assignment

- Prepare materials

- Prepare environment

o Reserve the computer lab for days the students will be working on their videos.

o Clear areas of materials for when the students take their pictures

- Prepare learners

o Explain briefly what they will be doing

o Review the rules of the activity

o Explain the rules of the computer lab

Require Learner Participation

- Have students listen to a short story made with http://www.animoto.com

o Review the elements of a story, such as characters, setting, introduction, conflict, and resolution.

- Remind students that they will be required tell their story, so writing out their story first is important.

o Have the students get into their groups of five.

o Hearing impaired student will have a gifted person in his/her group and the teacher will check on the group periodically to ensure he/she is being included.

o Have each group write the story together using the topic, “My First Day of Fifth Grade” using a brainstorming handout provided by the teacher.

o After each group has written their story, the teacher will proofread it and have the students make corrections, if needed.

o Have students divide their story into 3 sections, introduction, conflict, and resolution.

o Give each group one digital camera and have students then take pictures for each section of their story.

§ Introduction should have 1-2 pictures

§ Conflict should have 2-3 pictures

§ Resolution should have 1 picture

o Have students upload the pictures to their computers.

o Have students go to www.animoto.com and insert their pictures, then have the students add the text from the story they created.

o If they have time, students can add music to their video.

- Have students present their story.

o Each group will present using the teacher’s computer and projector.

o Each student will take turns reading one frame making sure to pause the video each time.

o Students will be sure to point out the introduction, conflict, and resolution in their story.

- Have students write a 2 paragraph reflection on the assignment using the questions provided by the teacher.

o Have students type out and upload their reflections to the class blog.
